Our search for decaf coffee started early in Alma Coffee’s history. We explored what decaffeinating our own coffee would look like, but sadly the best options we could find included decaffeinating entire containers (more than 40,000 pounds) at a time and shipping these containers to other countries. With our focus on always having the freshest coffee from our family farms, we knew the lead times, extended transits, and sheer volume was not in line with our ideal business practices. That’s when we began doing research on an official direct-trade partnership for decaf. Our search led us to a family-owned Nicaraguan farm called Selva Negra that warehouses their decaf in Atlanta, GA.—only miles from our warehouse and roastery! We loved everything about this decaf from the taste, the farm practices, and their use of a mountain water process for decaffeination.
